Ask Questions!!

I know this seems quite obvious, but I have been in many situations where I was in a group with colleagues, talking about a specific technical topic and using all kinds of abbreviations that I didn't know yet. I was afraid to ask, because I didn't want to seem like the dumb one. But it is not like that. All of us started somewhere and our colleagues at Nokia know that as well. If I just had asked questions right away, it would have helped me immensely.

Company

What do you like about your job and the company?

There are two parts to this.

Jobwise, I enjoy working on the newest technology in an international environment. It is exciting to be part of the future of communication.

Company-wise, I really love the open and supportive community we have at Nokia. For example, at Nokia Stuttgart we regularly organize community events where colleagues get together to play games, do sports and just have a good time together.

Greatest achievements

My greatest achievement is finishing the dual study program together with Nokia. My academic and professional journey was all about striking a balance between developing theoretical skills and gaining hands-on work experience. It was fun switching between the theoretical and practical parts of it but it can be quite challenging as well to balance these two worlds. This experience taught me how to effectively manage several responsibilities and take a targeted approach to studying.

Top Insider Advice

Beyond talent, I have realized that we need so much more to have a very successful career. Realizing a dream can take longer and include setbacks. From my personal experience, I have noticed that being open, resilient, flexible, and having an attitude to serve helps immensely. While aspiring to grow, we need to prepare well with concrete homework. Having the right attitude and a prompt, service mindset is crucial. One has to keep learning (and unlearning) and be prepared for the next big thing. As an example, while you are working on 5G, start preparing yourself for 6G. On the softer side, empathy and humility should be key attributes to be practiced. Managing emotions and being mindful play a huge role. Transparent communication and openness towards the multi-cultural and virtual environment are very important. Staying motivated and being a change management leader is critical. Find time to build your personal brand and network. Look for a suitable mentor who can make your journey smoother. Finally, never compromise on your Integrity, continue to build relationships, and grow trust.

Play the long game and focus on continuous growth. Step outside your comfort zone, take on new challenges, and learn from every role. Find synergies between what you do and where you want to go. Seek mentors and coaches who can guide your development, and remember that leadership is not about title but about helping others grow. Stay curious, adaptable, and focused on meaningful impact.

A friend invited me to apply as a software developer, so I did. When I got the results from the assessment test – the examiner informed me that I failed the exam but suggested me a QA position. I immediately jumped on the opportunity without knowing what QA was. The manager offered me that opportunity in the company as he knew my learnability. Nokia provided training, coaching, and mentoring, and I enjoyed the work. As I developed my knowledge, an architecture and specification position opened, and I was excited about it. But I thought I was not yet ready for the role. I consulted my manager about it and asked for his opinion, and he encouraged me to go for it and to try it out. Fast forward to hardship and several leaps of faith, and I am excited to grow and try new things. This year I started my new position. Looking back, I am grateful to mention three key points: 1. Don’t be afraid to try new things. There’s no additional knowledge if you already know it – what is QA? 2. Develop your knowledge. Learning is a never-ending process: if you don’t know – study! 3. How will you know if you don’t try? You might regret it one day if you haven't tried.
