It really depends a lot on the team I think. For some teams in R&D, you can already do a lot as an intern. Some interns work on improving platforms, some on doing small individual projects within the team such as a machine learning small project, etc. Of course, during an internship, you do not have enough time to grasp complex project's technicalities and contribute to the same stuff as the rest of the team, but generally, you can be quite involved in your own way.
