Vincent H. asked a question to Emre C.
I am a third year Robotics and Automation student at Algonquin College with experience in embedded software development and firmware engineering. My interest lies in the Embedded Software Co-op/Intern roles and I would like to better understand the daily responsibilities, onboarding process, company culture, and what helps interns stand out in these roles.
Hi Vincent,
While I didn't complete a Co-op, my colleague Nick M. did and he shared a few insights.
Your day-to-day tasks as a co-op can vary depending on the team. While neither of us was part of the Embedded Software Engineering teams, I can say that in most technically teams you are usually given your own smaller project within a larger development. This enables you to take ownership and focus on delivering value to the team.
The onboarding process is pretty smooth, but can start as early as 4 months in advance, so apply early!
The culture here in Ottawa is very welcoming. People are always trying to learn more and bring their best.
What helps interns stand out is not only just being good at what you do, but also showing that you are willing to put in the extra work. Asking questions is huge, and integrating yourself into the team is massive. Getting involved and getting your name out there is also a great way to get a reference to come back full time!
I hope this helps!
Cheers
Emre
