Hi Rana, thanks for taking the time. I’ve been a technical project manager for almost 2 years but I feel stuck. I rarely do what I was hired for, and though I take on a lot, I’m underpaid. Have you ever felt this way at Nokia or earlier in your career? How did you navigate through it?

Hi Daniel,

It’s really nice to connect with you on the Insider. I’m sorry to hear you’re going through a challenging period in your career.

I’ve definitely been there myself. Not at Nokia, but earlier in my career, I hit moments where I felt underappreciated or overlooked. It’s disheartening when your potential isn’t being fully recognized. Over time, I’ve come to see those moments not as dead ends, but as signals—gentle nudges to pause, reflect, and ask myself what’s missing. Is it growth? Impact? A sense of purpose?

Once I get that clarity, I try to take action—whether it’s starting a new initiative, finding a mentor, or having honest conversations with leadership about where I see my path going. In some cases in my career, I realized I’d grown as much as I could in a role, and even though it was hard, I made the decision to move on to a place where I felt truly seen and valued.

Sometimes the shift is internal—reframing your mindset, reconnecting with what drives you, or learning something new. Other times, it’s about making bold moves. You deserve to feel lit up by the work you do!

I am wishing you the best in your journey, don't give up!

Warm wishes,

Rana
