Searching for your first internship or co-op after just one year of college or university can feel overwhelming especially when you're competing with upper-year students. But don’t let that hold you back! You have more to offer than you might think. Here are some tips to help you shine:

  • Highlight All Work Experience: Whether it’s a part-time job from high school or a summer gig, include it! These roles demonstrate valuable skills like teamwork, time management, responsibility, and communication.
  • Showcase Your Passion Projects: Personal projects, portfolios, websites, GitHub repositories—anything that reflects your interest in the field—can make a big impact. They show initiative and curiosity beyond the classroom.
  • Include Volunteer Work and Campus Involvement: Participation in student groups, hackathons, or volunteer activities speaks volumes about your drive, collaboration skills, and willingness to learn. What also sets top candidates apart is their curiosity and eagerness to learn. Asking thoughtful, well-prepared questions shows genuine interest and initiative.
  • In some cases, you may be asked to complete a technical assessment. Don’t stress! It’s not always about getting the “right” answer. Often, interviewers are more interested in how you approach the problem, your thought process, and how you communicate your reasoning. The candidates who truly shine in interviews are those who come prepared to clearly articulate the skills and experiences that align with the role. They confidently speak to the projects, achievements, and qualifications listed on their CV. This brings their résumé to life with real examples.
